Looking ahead to 5 hour rides

I’m looking at my training plan, and in a few weeks, starting Feb 7th/8th, it calls for a 3 hour team ride on Saturday, and a 5 hour ride on Sunday. That’s a lot of hours, especially since I’m trying to get people together for what I’ve called a “2 hour” ride on Sundays. However, that ride will be starting later (~11am-12pm), so I’m thinking I can get in 3 hours before then. I think I may try to hook onto another team/group’s ride who has an earlier one (Uma?), and then meet up with my teamies later. Then it’s kind of like 2 totally different rides. Almost not like a 5 hour ride. Except that my ass will have been on that saddle for 5 hours.

Never fear, I only have 3 of these scheduled (3 weeks in a row, guess I won’t be partying in Februrary). After that and a rest week, they taper down to a lowly 4 hours. Sweet. 4 hour rides… with hills.

Man, it’s taking me a while to get back to the bike after my December hiatus. I feel like such a slacker, but I think this is only because I’ve been doing weight training instead of on-the-bike intervals. Which, to be honest, was probably my best training decisions in a long time, I needed that time away.  I need to work more slowly into my season, so I’m totally ramped up by June instead of burned out. And I have to keep telling myself this so I don’t freak out and jump on early training bandwagon. Been there, done that, don’t work (for me).

Holy crap, 5 hours! Maybe I can meet you somewhere on my bike and we can have lunch… (Err.. I mean, eat a few cliff shots while doing a hill repeat)
