In the news

Brett’s ghost bike stolen, then returned.  From what I can tell about the ghost bike, it looks to be someone who just wanted a bike saw it, and took it, unknowing that it was a memorial. Silly thief. From the letter they left with the bike, they sound pretty apologetic, which is kind of a nice surprise. Ugh, Brett…every time I think about that, I get choked up…I still don’t believe it. I don’t think I ever will. Speaking of death, a 15-year-old cyclist was killed this week in Beaverton, at an intersection I was at last weekend during the Worst Day of the Year Ride. Perhaps this will drive home the issue of bike safety–it’s not just SE Portland hippies out on their black fixies, it’s EVERYONE. It’s teenagers in Beaverton, it’s retirees in Hillsboro, it’s everyone. Alex was hit last week and is thankfully OK, but I would venture a guess that at least 1 cyclist get hit everyday and doesn’t report it.

In my news, I swam and ran some more this morning, and it felt awesome. Hurrah! I forgot how much of a core workout swimming is…I had been depending on my pull-buoy so much that i wasn’t reaping the rewards of using one’s core to stabilize while pulling AND kicking. Its crazy what a full body workout swimming is; you must twist your hips and back and forth to thrust yourself forward while keeping kicking legs and rotating arms and shoulders in sync. It’s pretty hard to get the timing down.

2 days to Cherry Pie. I’m totally nervous, I’ll admit it. Road racing makes me really nervous, probably because I’ve only done it a handful of times. I guess I’m used to crashing now, so I shouldn’t be afraid of that. :)   So far, only 19 Cat 4 women have registered, but since it looks to be sunny and 60 degrees on Sunday, I imagine a lot more will show. We shall see…

Wow, glad to hear Brett’s bike was returned. Reminds me of a snippet I heard about Mr Roger’s this weekend. When his car was stolen and it was reported on the news, he found it the next day back at his house with a note: If we would have known it was your car, we never would have taken it. So thieves have some sense of morality?

As for Alex getting hit – that sucks! Mac broke her collar bone last week out on the bikes :(
